The fashion show at Paseo de Colachis West featured talented student-models dressed in outfits styled by their peers and generously contributed by Fashion Valley Mall. “It’s really important to have project-based learning to give our students real world experience so they are prepared for their internships and for their jobs post-graduation,” said Justine Rapp Farrell, PhD, department chair of marketing at the Knauss School of Business . This 100% student-driven event provided a unique opportunity for students to gain practical exposure to event planning and promotion, while enhancing their academic journey with real world experiences. Student initiatives spanned from social media marketing, event management, branding, and handling industry partner relations. “Each person in this class, whether you were interested in social media or branding or public relations, we are all leaving with an experience across all of these ranges of disciplines that we can apply to our professional career in the future,” said marketing student Mahlia Flores. The marketing students felt it was important to add a charity aspect to this event in order to give back to the community. “We decided to donate all of the proceeds to the Maui Strong Fund for this event, as it directly aligns with the values and visions articulated by our university’s Care for our Common Home,” added Flores. The event raised $1,000 that will be donated to the Maui Strong Fund, which provides financial resources to support the immediate and long-term recovery needs for the people and places affected by the devastating Maui wildfires. “One of the missions of the Knauss School of Business is doing business for good and what that really means to me is more than just profit and more than just the bottom line. “It’s important to teach our students that you can give back to the community, you can support small businesses or non-profits, and really lift society up while you’re doing critical and strategic marketing work,” said Rapp Farrell.
