Intuit Credit Karma pairs AI with finance

Intuit Credit Karma is taking a different approach to financial modeling by pairing it with Gen AI, rather than relying on generic AI chatbots. The company has built AI assistants for specific moments like paying down debt, managing tax refunds, and allocating paychecks.

The Debt Assistant, Refund Assistant, and Paycheck Assistant each help consumers make specific financial decisions. Using a shared financial context for each consumer, the assistants generate personalized recommendations and explain the reasoning behind them.

To understand how this works in practice, Gurpreet Singh, Head of Product at Intuit Credit Karma, explains the architecture behind the company’s AI strategy. Singh notes that getting the underlying technological foundation right matters more than building fast.

Singh says the Debt Assistant pairs a financial optimization engine with a large language model. The two systems work together in two distinct stages, orchestrated together. First, a deterministic financial optimization engine built on event-based simulations and linear optimization ingests a member’s debt profile.

The engine evaluates different debt consolidation scenarios to solve for the mathematically optimal path, guaranteeing the savings number a member sees in their plan comes from an amortization formula, not an estimate. The second stage is powered by generative AI.

According to Singh, the architecture is split deliberately because when you’re helping someone consolidate their debt, accuracy is essential – the stakes are too high. Singh explains that the company uses prompts that have been tuned, so the language model isn’t making unsupported guesses.

This approach allows the Debt Assistant to provide personalized recommendations and explain the reasoning behind them, helping consumers understand both the recommended action and the logic behind it. By using a shared financial context for each consumer, the assistants can generate tailored advice.

For example, the Debt Assistant can help consumers handle the process of consolidating their debt, providing a clear plan and explanation of the benefits. This approach helps consumers make informed decisions about their financial situation.

The company’s use of GenAI and financial optimization engines is a key part of its strategy. By leveraging these technologies, Intuit Credit Karma is able to provide accurate and personalized recommendations to its users.
