High Yield Spread Misleads Investors on European Bond Risk - european bond yield spread
The CCC market includes two distinct groups: performing companies trading on spread and distressed companies trading on expected recovery values after restructuring.

As of August 12, 2026, the European high-yield market shows a CCC index spread of 1,306 basis points over government bonds. This figure suggests high compensation for credit risk.

However, the spread is misleading. The CCC market includes two distinct groups: performing companies trading on spread and distressed companies trading on expected recovery values after restructuring. Combining these groups creates an index spread that poorly represents either category.

Performing vs. Distressed: A Spread Divide

Performing CCC bonds, defined as those trading below 1,000 basis points, currently offer a spread of 438 basis points. This is historically tight and closer to single-B bond spreads than the headline CCC figure indicates.

These companies are expected to service their debt. Investors still face default, downgrade, and liquidity risks, but the compensation falls far short of the 1,306 basis points suggested by the aggregate CCC spread.

Above 1,000 basis points, bond pricing shifts focus. The potential for restructuring and the likelihood of recovery dominate, making the spread less relevant.

Beyond CCCs: Distortion in the Broader Market

While CCCs make up only 4.3% of the European high-yield index, the distortion extends further. Across the broader market, a small number of distressed bonds can significantly impact the average spread.

Currently, the mean index spread of 244 basis points suggests reasonable compensation in European high yield. However, the median spread of 169 basis points, nearing the tight end of its five-year range, indicates that typical performing bonds are priced more aggressively.
