1,159 new ETFs were launched through Oct 20, a record high for the year.

U.S. exchange-traded funds now hold $15 trillion in assets, a milestone that reflects rapid growth across the market.

Through October 20, issuers introduced a record 1,159 ETFs, surpassing the previous full-year high of 1,143 set in 2025. The pace of new products is unprecedented.

At the same time, 239 ETFs have been liquidated through August, meaning roughly one fund closes for every five launched, according to a VettaFi white paper.

Impact on Advisors and Clients

When a fund shuts down, investors often face forced sales that generate taxable capital gains in non-qualified accounts, creating unexpected tax bills for clients and extra work for advisors.

Closing periods also bring execution risk: market makers withdraw capital, trading volume drops, and bid-ask spreads widen, which can erode the performance the fund previously delivered.

Advisors must therefore treat short-lived products as tactical bets rather than core holdings, weighing the likelihood of a shutdown against the potential return before recommending them to clients.

Fund Size and Profitability

There are about 5,550 exchange-traded funds listed in the United States. The 24 largest hold more than $6.5 trillion, roughly 42% of total assets, showing a heavily top-heavy market.

More than half of all funds, about 51%, manage under $100 million, representing just 0.5% of the market’s total value. This $100 million level is widely viewed as the breakeven point for profitability.

Only around 13% of new funds reach $250 million in assets within three years, and just 4% surpass $1 billion in the same timeframe, highlighting the difficulty of scaling.

Complex Vehicles and Market forces

Derivative-based and leveraged strategies account for over 40% of both new launches and closures, indicating that more complex products carry heightened liquidation risk.

Issuers often rush niche, hedged, or yield-focused strategies to capture fleeting market sentiment. When investor interest wanes or distribution stalls, these vehicles struggle to grow and are quickly shuttered.

Guidance for Advisors

Core allocations such as broad, low-cost index funds offer deep liquidity, low fees, and stable investor bases, reducing the chance of an abrupt shutdown.

Tactical or satellite products require close monitoring. Setting clear expectations about a fund’s intended horizon and exit criteria helps prevent client panic if the issuer decides to close the vehicle.
