Australia’s Channel Capital-Fidante merger wins ACCC approval

The merger between Challenger’s fund management unit, Fidante, and Channel Capital has now received final approval from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). The transaction, first announced in June, will unite two firms overseeing a combined total of $150 billion in assets. This consolidation establishes the new venture as one of Australia’s largest investment platforms by scale.
The resulting entity, named Channel Group, will incorporate several well-known brands, including Kapstream, Impax Asset Management, and Eiger Capital, all operating under the Fidante division. Its operations will span three core areas: affiliate partnerships with specialized boutique investment managers, distribution agreements with leading global financial firms, and institutional services such as fund administration and middle-office solutions tailored for major clients.
A separate holding company, Channel Group Holdings Pty Ltd, will oversee the acquisition, with Glen Holding leading the initiative. Challenger Funds Management will continue to hold a 45% stake in the merged business. The ACCC’s Phase 1 Determination concluded that the merger would not significantly diminish competition, as the combined market share remains modest and alternative providers will persist in the market.

Closing of the deal is anticipated in the first half of the 2027 fiscal year. Nick Hamilton, CEO of Challenger, framed the merger as a strategic move to accelerate growth. He highlighted the expanded geographic footprint, access to a wider investor base, and new career opportunities for staff. The partnership also allows Challenger to preserve its long-term ownership while gaining access to a more diversified platform.
This development follows a broader trend of consolidation within Australia’s fund management industry. In recent years, larger firms have increasingly acquired smaller boutique operators to enhance their service capabilities. With ACCC approval secured, the combined entity can now proceed with its restructuring without additional regulatory obstacles.
