The Texas Capital Texas Oil Index ETF (OILT) has delivered impressive returns this year, fueled by climbing crude prices and robust company performance. Through October 29, the fund’s benchmark index has surged 14.2% in the past month and 55.3% since January.

Oil prices are on track to finish their fourth straight month of increases, primarily due to escalating Middle East geopolitical risks and ongoing supply constraints. These factors have particularly benefited major oil producers, including Exxon Mobil (XOM), Chevron (CVX), and BP (BP).

Geopolitical concerns continue propelling oil’s upward trajectory as the month concludes. Market participants appear concerned about potential U.S. actions against Iran following the upcoming midterm elections. Additionally, recent missile attacks by Houthi rebels against Saudi energy facilities have renewed fears of supply chain disruptions in key Middle Eastern transit regions, further pushing prices higher.

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude is currently trading at $104 per barrel during intraday sessions, up from $90 at September’s close. Within the energy sector, exploration and production firms, commonly known as upstream companies, have shown the greatest responsiveness to rising spot oil prices.

Third-quarter earnings reports have further strengthened the energy sector’s momentum. Three major integrated companies reported stronger-than-expected financial performance, demonstrating operational efficiency, prudent capital management, and healthy balance sheets. Exxon Mobil (XOM), which represents OILT’s largest holding, exceeded earnings forecasts for both revenue and net income while announcing a dividend increase.

Chevron (CVX), another top-10 holding in OILT, also surpassed analyst expectations for both revenue and earnings, driven by strong performance in its upstream and refining divisions. Meanwhile, BP (BP), included in the fund’s portfolio, reported third-quarter results that beat Wall Street projections, supported by higher refining margins and continued cost-cutting efforts.

Beyond earnings performance, merger and acquisition activity reflects the sector’s strong cash positions. Ovintiv (OVV), a component of OILT, has agreed to purchase Canadian Montney producer Logan Energy for approximately $890 million, expanding its operational footprint while maintaining its policy of returning over 60% of free cash flow to investors.
