Western Union, a cross-border payments company, has announced it is discontinuing its European digital banking offering, Western Union Digital Bank. The news was announced on the company’s website, stating that all Western Union Digital Bank accounts will be closed two months after users receive their closure notice.
The digital bank, introduced in 2022, was operated by Western Union International Bank GmbH in Austria and offered current accounts with IBAN functionality, peer-to-peer money transfers, debit cards, recurring payments, multicurrency wallets, international remittance services, and more.
Available in Germany, Italy, Romania, and Poland, the app was powered by Mambu’s cloud-based platform. On the account closure date, users will no longer have access to the Western Union Digital Bank app and the debit card linked to their accounts will be deactivated.

Users will receive a confirmation once their account is closed, and they are instructed to withdraw or transfer any remaining balances before the closure date. They should also notify any parties that use their Western Union Digital Banking IBAN to update their payment details.
Western Union notes that it regularly reviews its products and services, and following one of these reviews, it decided to discontinue Western Union Digital Bank. The company explains that any funds remaining in a user’s account after closure will be handled in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and the General Terms and Conditions governing their account.
While the digital banking service is being discontinued, Western Union adds that customers can still access its core money transfer services through its website or app.
