Intuit Credit Karma pairs AI with finance

Intuit Credit Karma takes a unique approach to financial assistance, building AI assistants for specific moments like paying down debt, managing tax refunds, and allocating paychecks. The company’s Debt Assistant, Refund Assistant, and Paycheck Assistant help consumers make informed decisions using a shared financial context to generate personalized recommendations.

Each assistant explains the reasoning behind its recommendations, helping consumers understand both the action and the logic behind it. This approach differs from generic AI chatbots that leave customers to connect the dots on their biggest financial decisions.

Gurpreet Singh, Head of Product at Intuit Credit Karma, explains the architecture behind the company’s AI strategy. The Debt Assistant pairs a financial optimization engine with a large language model (LLM), with the two systems working together in distinct stages.

The first stage uses a deterministic financial optimization engine built on event-based simulations and linear optimization. This engine ingests a member’s debt profile, including open tradelines, balances, interest rates, monthly payments, and their stated goals.

From there, it evaluates different debt consolidation scenarios to solve for the mathematically optimal path, guaranteeing the savings number a member sees in their plan comes from an amortization formula, not an LLM’s best guess. The second stage is powered by generative AI (GenAI), which generates personalized recommendations and explanations.

According to Gurpreet Singh, the architecture is split deliberately because when you’re helping someone consolidate their debt, you cannot afford to get the numbers wrong – the stakes are too high.

They focus on getting the underlying technological foundation right. By pairing financial modeling with Gen AI, they can provide consumers with reliable and personalized financial guidance, setting it apart from generic AI chatbots.

The use of a shared financial context for each consumer also enables the assistants to generate recommendations that take into account the individual’s specific financial situation, making the guidance more relevant and effective.

Intuit Credit Karma’s approach to AI assistance highlights the importance of building a strong technological foundation. By investing in a deterministic financial optimization engine, they can ensure that their AI assistants provide accurate and reliable guidance.

As financial situations continue to evolve, Intuit Credit Karma’s focus on building a strong technological foundation will be essential in providing consumers with the guidance they need to make informed financial decisions.

It is essential.
